Depending on the application, I would not use just a computer. They do not have the security measures that real servers have. You can get a server from dell and they will teach you how to work it. You can use any old (or new) PC and load linux. Install and configure Apache server. Copy your website to this computer and obtain a public IP address from your ISP. Before setting up your DNS, make sure you have a server.

The apache server is a good free option.

if you are using a router, you%26#039;ll have to define a forwarding on your router, so that it will send all the information coming into port 80, to the computer where your webserver is on. check your router help documentation for that. (oh, and if your router uses dynamic routing - that%26#039;s bad... cause the IP of your server will change every time you restart)

In general, NTFS file system is more secure... so if your computer runs of FAT32 file system - you might want to reformat (it%26#039;s another complicated story though). and, Of course, make sure you have a good anti-virus.

I have my own web site and server, but my paid web space restricts the size of uploaded files to 5000KB - and the PDF I want to link to is 8000KB. They offer a free trial as well if you want to test the services.

I can only speak in generalites as there are simply too many variables to refine my answer. In general, a shared host provides less overall bandwith than a dedicated host. So, if you share hosting, find a provider with fewer users. Fewer users means less competitin for the available bandwidth. There are web providers which will provide you with a dedicated hosting service, in which you are guaranteed a certain amount of bandwidth. Your specific needs will determine which is best for you. If you are cojnducting a business and need bandwidth, then a dedicated hosting service is best even though the cost per month will be higher. Shared hosting is cheaper than dedicated hosting, but then you have to compete with all of the other users of the same hosting service, and if they are doing business, may hog the bandwidth, which makes yours suffer. Your ranking may not change with bandwidth in search engines, since ranking comes from several parameters like hits per unit time and keywords, not throughput. You need to do more homework on the throughput issue. If cost is a factor, then by all means, go with the lowest per month, but your bandwidth/throughput may suffer. Only you can decide what works best for the purpose of your site(s) and how you conduct your web business, if indeed you are in business. I opted for a shared host with fewer users for my sites, but then again, I am not doing business, just running personal domains for my own entertainment.

I do believe I uploaded everything correctly to my free web host site using an FTP client. After everything is finished, I tried checking te site on the URL provided by my hosting provider. You didn%26#039;t link those files correctly and that%26#039;s why you can%26#039;t see it from others%26#039; computer but yours. Basically you%26#039;re currently linking all the from directly from your computer and when you publish it, it%26#039;s calling out from your computer instead of your hosting server, of course others are not able to view but you.

I need a web hosting company that has *servers in India*. I asked this question before, didn%26#039;t get the useful answer. Most of the web hosting sites I came across have offices in India, but servers in U.S.

Do you know of any web hosting company that has server in India? I know of two companies rediff and Net4. Rediff is my competitor, so I don%26#039;t want to host there. Net4India is very expensive for what they offer. I would appreciate if you can give me some pointers on this topic.

Unfortunately, this answer DOES involve your hosting company for the most part.

And it%26#039;s just MX, not MMX. Basically, the mail server needs to be setup and the mail routed to the mail server... by the main router and post master and all that.

If the host is that lousy, switch to a different one. As you control the register it takes less than 24 hours to update. This is important.

okay I%26#039;m gonna ask again just to be sure....here is what is going on. I and this other girl(becky) were members of a site the original owner(brad) decided to give it to us. She transfered the domain name to me. then she transfered the host stuff to Becky. Well then Becky decides that she is the sole owner of the site and I have nothing to do with it anymore. I was wonder what having the domain in my name means and if there is anything that I can do? What is the difference between hosting and the domain? The domain name points to the Web server and the site on it. For example, the domain name answers.yahoo.com points to the computers at Yahoo! that host Answers.

You quite clearly need technical, and possibly legal, help.

1. You need to establish who is the registrant of the domain name. The registrant is the %26quot;owner%26quot; of the name. It%26#039;s the Registrant who ultimately determines what is done with a domain name, such as what Web server it points to.

You can find out who the registrant is by visiting a Whois server, such as http://www.netsol.com/whois and searching for your domain name.

If you are not the registrant, you are out of luck and this conversation is basically over.

If your name is listed as the Registrant, you can basically change other information about the name and get it to point at a new site.

Yes, you do need to buy/purchase a domain name first. Next you need to have your domain %26quot;hosted%26quot; somewhere. This is where you will store all the computer code (like Java Scripting or HTML, etc) and pictures or whatever you like on that server. I%26#039;ve been a webmaster for a few websites for the past several years, and it%26#039;s very rewarding. I collect license plates for a hobby and thus started my own license plate collecting webpage back in 1999. There is a LOT of competition for website domain registration as well as hosting services. In many cases, you can get a %26quot;combined%26quot; package and save money by getting both. One company that I use and is very competitive is godaddy.com. Yahoo has it%26#039;s own hosting service as well.

As to web designs, you could try Microsoft Frontpage which in its basic format, easier to work with than some others I know, if you search google for free webpage designer, you should find some that are free.

This is a common problem for first time or beginning web developers.

Generally one of two things happened. The first possibility is that you didn%26#039;t upload the images (they are still on your computer). Sounds more like a permissions problem on your website. Your PHP files are likely the vulnerable spot, as scripts are easy to grab and change if the permissions are not proper.

All your files should be restricted to execution by your website, and not be accessible to the outside world. I see many sites where their script files are located in a directory that is accessible via an anonomous ftp, which allows someone to go in and modify the scripts and files.

Get someone who has experience with such things to help you. It%26#039;s not something I can explain thoroughly here.

alphanumeric passwords are good, but are easy targets for a good password dictionary or brute forcer. i reccomend a sentence, that includes numbers with no spaces. it is easy to remember, and almost impossible to crack.

Where I see it most often is people who hire the cheapest programmer they can get. Web designers are NOT programmers (and programmers, frankly, make lousy web designers) When I see this happen, I sometimes see these same people go right back hiring someone to %26quot;fix%26quot; the problem for the same low rates. Your problem is most likely in the PHP script itself, the attacker may not have even logged into your account.

Anything with %26quot;file upload%26quot; capability is the first place to check, especially if uploaded files can be accessed directly through the web server. (for example, uploading a %26quot;.php%26quot; file and then accessing it in a browser,

NOTE: this can manifest itself for %26quot;image uploading%26quot; tools or mp3 file uploads. Make sure anything uploaded is run through a series of filters before being made available to a web server.

Other places to check are form inputs, anything that gets %26quot;eval%26quot;%26#039;d is suspect, finally, anything that involves file paths that are controlled via form variables.

You%26#039;ll probably read about %26quot;SQL injections%26quot;, doesn%26#039;t sound like that is what happened here.

Security is, unfortunately, something that is overlooked by cheap, low-rate programmers (they have to cut corners to be so cheap)

Secondly, as I said, web masters are NOT programmers. They%26#039;re good at layout and making things look really good. Programming on the other hand, is a different thing.

Your question is a little confused... Do you want a Web site or a domain? A domain is something like example.com. A Web site is a set of associated resources that are served by a Web server. they are 2 distinct names! the outside world sees them as different. You will get hits on both, unless you add a little scripting to send the perfectportugalproperties.com people to www.perfectportugalproperties.com with a re-direct. You can do it on an apache server or with a tiny javascript that redirects people who use the less preferred url.

I am doing a school project where I am supposed to pretend to be a web master designing a web server to host an online company%26#039;s web site. This company is completely online (no actual physical buildings) and sells merchandise to teenagers exclusively.

I know that I need a server, but I don%26#039;t know what the server needs in regard to speed, memory, storage capabilities, and connection speeds. Basically a web server is a computer that allows other computers across the world to access files stored on it. In terms of the type of hardware that is required, any computer could be used as a web host. However a decent web server would have a good amount of memory (RAM), such as 2 GB, a decent sized hard disk for storing all of the web pages and photos, so say 80GB. The processor determines how fast web programs run on the server, so atleast 2Ghz processor.

The web server software is completely separate software to the operating system, so you could have a windows operating system (such as Windows XP), then have the program: Apache (web server software) running on the computer.

I%26#039;m used to working with linux (apache) servers, but now I own an offsite Windows 2003 server running IIs6. I seen the help files, but they confuse me and I dont really know where to start to be honest. When i go into the IIS administrator, it says everything including %26#039;webserver%26#039; is running, but i%26#039;m unable to access the default web pages with my browser, i tried both my server IP and %26#039;localhost%26#039;. I%26#039;ll also have to set up nameservers, php, mysql, etc...but first i wanna see the default web pages load in a browser before i get to far in it. The server came with one IP, i ordered another because NS nameservers require 2. I plan to use this server to host a %26#039;halo%26#039; game, as well as multiple web site....i considered a hosting business to help pay for the server. Any and all information would be appreciated. If i can%26#039;t figure out how to use the IIS, which i rather would, i%26#039;ll just install Apache and do it the old fashioned way. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You can see the default website in a web browser with this convention:

I would abandon the default webpage altogether though. In the IIS Manager:

1. Right-click on Websites and pick New%26gt;Web Site

2. Go through the wizard and give it a static IP - don%26#039;t use (All Assigned)

Once the Wizard is setup right-click on the site and go to Properties. Make sure that the right homepage file (index.html etc.) is the default content page.

Then you can access the site in your browser by IP address until you get your second DNS server setup. Then you can assign a hostname to that addy.

Again, Pizza Next Door%26#039;s high web presence was achieved by proper web design and placement of relevant metatags according to Yahoo%26#039;s publication guidelines.

If your domain name is in the expiration process you can not transfer registrars. This is an ICANN rule not the registrars. If you want the name renew it as quickly as possible before it completes the expiration process and becomes available for anyone to register.

After you have renewed the name you can transfer it to any registrar you want.

Yes it is possible and very common to register your domain name with one company and have it hosted by another.

To establish your own domain name registration and web hosting site (not a reseller) is possible however it would be very expensive.

To become a reseller is easy and requires no technical knowledge, the company you are selling for will provide all the customer service and tech support. You are basically promoting their products and services and receiving a commission on sales.

You can transfer your existing domain if its not released. If it is released by the current registerar then you may register a new domain from goDaddy.

I am interested in setting up a web site that has sponsored links on the page. a few questions i have are:

How do you choose a good host for the site?

How do you get your site to come up on a search engine when there are so many other sites out there?

Can you really make a lot of money from having this kind of site?

What is involved with setting up a web-page?

A1. Finding a good host is probably not so hard, but what is more difficult is sorting out what each one offers for the money they charge you for hosting your site, so shopping around is the best answer and although this is time consuming it has to be done in order to get the type of hosting package you want at a price that suits you.

A2. It is very easy to get your site out there, you submit it by clicking on submit your site, have a look at the bottom of the yahoo home page and you will see that text, however that is only submitted to yahoo, you need to submit it to several crawlers, serach engines, search the web for site submission software some will charge but a lot are free, I found the free submission software works very well. More importantly in this matter is the name of your site, and the keywords you use which should be the words you think the majority of people will type into the search box of their home page when looking for their information. so you need to try to pick your keywords to match what you think they will type in, therefore your site will come up in their search results, making it likely they may click on your site and so give you plenty of visitors which is what you want if you are carrying advertising links. Think carefully and also allow that people will often mispell a word so include the words mispelled in your keywords also to allow for this. For example if a person was looking for Accommodation they might spell it like that or Acomodation OR Acommodation etc etc.

It will take search engines a good 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 weeks to pick up on your newly submitted site, as time goes on it will get better, and don%26#039;t forget you need to submit it at least once per month or per 6 weeks, to keep it up there, submit it to new engines and also to the engines you have already submitted it to.

A3. I don%26#039;t know if you can make a lot of money or some money from your intended type of site, I have a site but it is just a personal site, containing my own poetry, help with word, help with excel, and general info about my area where I live, nothing exciting, I don%26#039;t entertain banners or ads

Just as a matter of interest, Microsoft%26#039;s Frontpage Express is a good application and is easy to use to create your first website, you don%26#039;t have to learn html (hyper-text markup language) it%26#039;s all click and choose sort of application. (it will get you started) of course if you already know html then this is irrelevant.

Microsoft Frontpage *always* says that.... It%26#039;s a minor inconvenience, but if you ignore it, everything should work.

When you get the error message, just click the %26#039;no%26#039; button (meaning, *no, do not remove .... email / person from list....*)

You can *register* a domain without actually setting up a Web site, but you will still have to purchase the rights from an official domain registrar. Back in the day, Network Solutions was *the* place to do this, but now you can register for as cheap as $6 for one year through Yahoo!, GoDaddy, or any other number of sites. Most of these sites will offer bundled package deals that give you Web hosting, email, etc., but if you don%26#039;t need that then don%26#039;t buy it.

Of course, remember that you need to re-register the domain every 3-5 years (depending on how long your contract is) or it goes back to the public domain.

You can recheck the name and simply buy ownership for one year without any hosting package. You can also do this with Godaddy.com. Although each site does provide hosting you won%26#039;t be restricted to that company when you do pick a hosting company. You will have an option to move the name to your prefered hosting company when you find it.

Purchasing a domain for the year does hold it for you, but as for reserving a domain there is such a thing called %26#039;domain parking%26#039; that does just that. I%26#039;m not sure the differance / benefits of that though since I haven%26#039;t done it personally.

You need to upload the .swf (Flash file) to the site as well. The HTML page is the container that holds the Flash file. Be sure that your .swf file is in the same directory as was on your local computer. Once you upload your .swf, you should be able to view your Flash movie.

There are many ways to get form data sent to your email. gmail is fine as the destination.

You need to understand that the page you are working on needs to communicate with an application running on the server to actually send. These server applications can be ASP, PHP, SQL, etc...

Find out which application(s) your server is running, then set your submit button to do the appropriate action. Its not hard to learn how to do, and there are many free examples all over the net (and in FP help), but you HAVE to know which server application to talk to - then talk to it in the way it wants.

If you%26#039;re not familiar with html codes, you should start out with WYSIWYG kind of software. Your best bet would be Dreamweaver from Adobe. Besides being transparent between the both OSes, most of their products are the must in Graphics field. So any of your daughter%26#039;s works would be easily placed on the pages.

Since you have time on your hand, you can pick up the HTML skills as you go along by viewing html codes from your page in Dreamweaver.

IMO, it%26#039;s the fastest way to get your web pages going.

The best way to build a site is to do it from scratch, using a text editor and previewing with a web browser. If you have the time, check out a book called %26quot;Stylin%26#039; with CSS.%26quot; It will teach you the basics on how to code using html and cascading style sheets.

This way, you will be able to work on your site from anywhere with an internet connection, and ftp program and a text editor. Its also very rewarding.

I saw that someone recommended direct mail and I would highly advise against it. It has become very expensive, and your ROI is typically much less than your investment.

I would suggest marketing via unique avenues. Everyone is trying to get their foot in the door as a web site host, etc. BUT, it sounds like you have already become successful - market the reasons...market your portfolio...show people that others have had confidence in your company.

I have designed a small website for a group I run. My trade union has kindly arranged for the site to be hosted free of charge by the same company that do their hosting.

The hosting company say that for security reasons I need a static IP address to upload my site from. My home broadband is with virgin.net, which I understand uses dynamic IP addresses. Would switching to another ISP give me a static IP address or do I need to try and find another web host that will let me upload from a dynamic IP address? Is it normal to need a static IP address to upload a website?

Sounds like you are getting the site hosted by someone who is not really an ISP or Internet Host. It is a business that is nice enough to get you use their server. They are requesting a static IP because that way they can open an FTP port and restrict to only accept traffic from you. This protects them from hackers. It is not an unreasonable request. I would probably do the same if it was one of the servers I support.

Talk to your ISP, because most of them do have a way to provide a static IP. There are many people who need one. If not, you will have to thank them for the offer, and then host it elsewhere.

Can IIS work independently? Or do I have to install other software like PHP, Apache, etc....? I am trying to make a web server on my own pc even just for 1 hour straight. If IIS is running, check the task manager to be sure..type http://localhost in the address bar. If you see the IIS default page then you are set. You can replace that page with whatever you like. It should be in the www directory on your drive.

If you type your computers IP not the routers you should see the same thing. If you are trying the public IP (that will also be the router IP) you will need to tell the router to forward port 80 traffic to your computers IP on the LAN side of the router. Or make your computer a DMZ (bad idea). Check your routers book or help page for setting up servers.

In my school computer lab there is a LAN with 25 computers which the students and teachers are using. The server is using windows 2000 server OS. Fonts in Dynamic Images don't work using ImageTTFText()?

Okay, I uploaded my arial.ttf font from my computer onto my web hosting site and then tried to load some text onto a dynamic image using that font like so:

and then whenever I load the page it comes up with this error: Could not find/open font in [my page] on line 32.

I don%26#039;t see why this error is coming up, because I have arial.ttf uploaded on the same directory of this php file.

If it matters, I%26#039;m using http://awardspace.com for hosting it.

If there is a way to fix this, then please tell, if not... Could you tell me an alternate way to load text with a font on a dynamic image?

You have to use an ftp client in order upload your files on the internet. Your internet provide should give you an account and password.

Then you will need to use the client (software) such as Eudora (as I%26#039;m sure there are many types of software to do this around) to upload the files to the provider%26#039;s server.

From there, it is on the internet...

I%26#039;m working on a Vaio (so no IBook) without photoshop (not that I%26#039;d know how to use it anyway) and I%26#039;d like to know a good and eas*ier* to use free web hosting site that I could use to put photos and such. I then need help with how to design it and then how I can put postcard viewer on there with my pictures. Use Yahoo%26#039;s filemanager. There%26#039;s an upload button-- you just need to do each file by itself (I think you can do 4 at a time?). If iWeb gave you an index page and a folder, create the folder in your geocities root, then upload the index to your root and the contents of the folder to the folder you just made. It should work just fine.

I have uploaded html files to the web hosting site and included the start page as index.html. I thought that the moment the user types the url of the website and clicks go then he/she would be taken to the default website. This is not the case, to access mine the user has to type www.mydomain.com/index.html yet i want the user to just type www.mydomain.com and click go.

Check with your host. Nearly all use index.html or index.htm. I have seen some though that use a variant like start.htm etc. Another one that used to be common place was default.html though that is in little use today. Hope this helps
