What are all the aspects involved in the creation of an online company's web server?

I am doing a school project where I am supposed to pretend to be a web master designing a web server to host an online company%26#039;s web site. This company is completely online (no actual physical buildings) and sells merchandise to teenagers exclusively.

I%26#039;ve been trying to figure it out, but am soo confused as to how it is done! I know that I need a server, but I don%26#039;t know what the server needs in regard to speed, memory, storage capabilities, and connection speeds. Also, I have no clue as to what web server software is (I think it%26#039;s a different kind of operating system) and I don%26#039;t know what features could be included. The website appearently has something called dynamic pages... what are those even? PLUS! Security... where the heck to I get started on that for a big company? HELP!

What are all the aspects involved in the creation of an online company%26#039;s web server?

Basically a web server is a computer that allows other computers across the world to access files stored on it. In terms of the type of hardware that is required, any computer could be used as a web host. However a decent web server would have a good amount of memory (RAM), such as 2 GB, a decent sized hard disk for storing all of the web pages and photos, so say 80GB. The processor determines how fast web programs run on the server, so atleast 2Ghz processor.

The web server software is completely separate software to the operating system, so you could have a windows operating system (such as Windows XP), then have the program: Apache (web server software) running on the computer.

Hope this helps

connection speeds doesnt really matter, its the ammount of concurrent connections to the server that must be able to withstand it. %26quot;some hosts offer limited ammounts%26quot; so it depends upon how many people will be connecting during the month.

storage you could get away with using 100mb but all depends upon how many items you are selling

if you are dealing with selling things then you need an ecommerce type website which will involve some form of database %26quot;such as sql%26quot; and a programming language for the pages %26quot;such as asp or php%26quot;

the type of server will probably be using apache webserver with either cgi, asp or php and sql %26quot;depending upon what option you go for%26quot;

a dynamic page would be a not physical page e.g. you dont have products1062.php but you will have somthing like product.php?id=1062,

the product.php page will receive information from your database regarding the product with the id of 1062

security, if you are using it for selling things and you have a credit card processing part %26quot;on the page and not a third part one such as paypal%26quot; then you will need a security certificate, and an ssl connection.

please google any parts you dont understand like ssl

hope that helps you

Other Replys:Well, I use this: http://ww3.runhosting.com/

It doesn%26#039;t put ads even for free hosting plans. I went for it by seeing the great features that it offers for free. I liked this host so much that I bought their paid hosting service just recently. Its worth trying.
