I am searching for a reliable dedicated hosting company that will be able to meet the needs of my future music site. On my site, users will be able to upload/ download mp3%26#039;s as well as upload photos. I am not entirely sure what I am going to need in terms of plans, or how many page views(est: %26gt;300,000)/ mp3 downloads I will be getting a month, but know that I want to be on the safe side, and insure that there will not be a server overload, allowing at least several hundred people to access the site at the same time, without it slowing down. I%26#039;ve turned on IIS on my computer at home and other computers on my local network can access the website I set up so I know the web site and the server are working. I know very little about DNS and nameservers, but basically I got this thing called DNS2go which is supposed to allow people without static IP addresses to host a website. DNS2go is a program that you put on your server that continuously updates your current IP address whenever it changes with the DNS2go website. All you do is point your registered domain name to their nameservers and it is supposed to work. I know the DNS2go service has pointed my domain name to my IP address, but for some reason, when you type in my domain name outside of my network (anywhere else) it won%26#039;t work.

More then likely your router or software firewall is stopping your server from being accessed from the internet side. If you are using a router you need to place your server computers IP address in the DMZ of the routers firewall.

Also I am assuming that you do not hand out DHCP addresses to your web server. Ensure that it always gets the same IP, if you do or better set a static IP for the webserver.

SSL certificate $20/yr (one site).
Their servers (time to load pages) have improved over the last two years.

I have the same issue, in that I have several sites that I have to have hosting for and price being an issue. This brought me to an even bigger decision of whether I should get individual hosting accounts for each, something that allowed for multiple sites to be hosted on one plan, or go with a reseller package. Which route would offer me the features I really wanted vs the cost of each option.
After careful review, pondering and recommendations, I opted to go with HostGator.com and purchased the smallest Reseller package they have, even though you can host unlimited domains on their %26quot;Baby%26quot; package shared hosting plan for less money.
- Their smallest Reseller Package is $24.95 a month.
- The %26quot;Baby%26quot; package on Shared Hosting is $8.95 if you pay for it monthly. It%26#039;s cheaper if you pay per year or multiple years.
I%26#039;m going to tell you my reasons for going with the Reseller package, in case my reasons are things you would like to have too.
On the reseller package you get a WHM (Web Hosting Manager) where you can set up all of your domains, as well as anyone else you would like to host (for free or charge them). In your WHM you can create a separate cPanel (control panel) for each of your sites, among many other things.
This will make each site like it has it%26#039;s own hosting account. All of the files in the file manager are for that one site, which I personally like.
This will also allow you to have more detailed statistics because the stat area of your control panel will show only the results for that one domain which is something that was important to me.
Whereas, the Baby package on the shared hosting, which allows for unlimited domains, uses the %26quot;Add On Domain%26quot; feature to accomplish this.
That means that you have one main control panel, and each of your sites are set up in that control panel. The stats are shared and would not give you as detailed of an account as you get by each having their own stats. It would be more of an overall accounting of stats for all of your sites combined, which may not bother you in the least.
If you aren%26#039;t familiar with AddOn domains, it%26#039;s important to know a bit about how they work, so you will know if that is what you want and what will be best for you in your situation. Here is a quick rundown of how they work...
You have your main hosting account, set up for one specific domain name.
Inside your control panel is an Addon Domain feature. When you click on it, it asks you the name of the domain you want to add on. So you enter for example blah.com, a username and password for it.
A folder is automatically created in your file manager named %26quot;blah%26quot; and inside that folder is where you will put all of your files for blah.com. The URL for that domain will be blah.main-site-name.com
After you set up the Add On domain you go back to the previous page and then set up your redirect, which is simply setting it up so that anyone who enters blah.com into their browser, will be redirected to blah.main-site-name.com where your files for blah.com are located.
So if you opt to go with a package like this, then you would need to do that for all of the sites you host and all of your sites%26#039; files would be in that one file manager but in their own directories.
Anywhooo.. there it is, lol. I%26#039;m sorry this answer is so wordy, but choosing the right package and how those packages work, to me, is just as important as choosing a good hosting company.
I can honestly say that I have been extremely pleased with HostGator. I have experienced no downtime that I am aware of. They offer several avenues of support (ticket system, toll free phone #, well documented knowledge base and live chat). I have used several different paid hosting companies in my online experience and this is by far the best I have used.

At minimum you would need a few T-1s bonded, prefereably a T-3 and you%26#039;re looking at a couplt to a few grand a month. I%26#039;ve got a pair of T-1s bonded and, if I remember right, its about 1200 per month... a T-3 would be about twice that.

It really depends on how much these videos will be accessed. You need a great deal of diskspace and bandwidth. Shared hosting probably will not work for you. You need to do some calculations to estimate the diskspace and bandwidth you will need.
A dedicated server costs $100+ a month.

P.S. Start a blog to promote your Web site. Word press is a good one. It you have the right Web Site Build software, it includes a blog feature so that every time you create a new page, it gets posted on the Web as a blog. Turn your blog into articles and submit them to article sites with your URL.
P.P.S. You flat out do not have enough content on your Web site. If you did the SEs would find you. You need more information, more Web pages with quality content, to attract traffic via the SEs.. One page Web sites have no no content. Create more pages. Use the content to submit articles to article Web sites. Make sure the articles refer back to your Web page. This will attract more visitors and the SEs.

I am trying to host a web page from my computer so i can download files off it when I%26#039;m not at home. I have done this from my friends houses but because my ISP has a firewall that blocks incoming connections (any connections that i do not start myself) i am unable to do this. Do you know any way around this? all i can think of is to use some kind of proxy or VPN but i don%26#039;t know where i could find one that would be free to use. any help?

I really like a solution from Microsoft called FolderShare you install it from Foldershare.com and it gives you a web interface to all your files. And you can search your files so if you can%26#039;t remember exactly which file you were looking for you can still find them.
I also use this to sync files over the internet so I can have MyDocuments on two PC%26#039;s and always have everything both places.

Also the site has done a naughty naughty by linking directly to the BBC%26#039;s video stream without giving any credit. This is a lot of bandwidth usage that the site saves money on (and it can cost a lot of money trust me) and it just costs the BBC instead.

i think the easiest thing to do would be to have the live webcam stream through http://ustream.tv/
Its very easy to use and has alot of privacy settings. After you get the live video on ustream all you have to do is embed the stream into ur website.
